Flying to and landing on gulf oil rigs is a very risky operation. Many pilots train for thousands of hours to successfully qualify for this task. When attempting a landing on an oil rig. Approach the landing pad from the direction that is away from the rig, there are several cranes and protuberances that must be avoided. Slow to an approach speed of 10 to 15 knots until within 100ft or so, then slow to 2 to 3 knots and land on the pad. If there are excessive winds, which is not uncommon in the Gulf, the winds must be taken into account.
