This guide will help you with flying on Multi-Player servers.
- Flight Sim has detailed instructions and training aids to help you learn to fly and use
all the available equipment. Please do not just load FS and jump into a multi-player game and
expect the other players to take the time to teach you the basics of your own Flight Sim.
- The other players may be happy to help you but they are there to enjoy their flights and not
spend time teaching you the fundamentals that you should have learned in your Flight Sim Training
sessions.
TEAMSPEAK WARNING
You may find a server that provides a TeamSpeak channel but does not support it.
If there is no Host or ATC in TS then keep your FS Chat window Open to talk to the Host.
Failure to do this may get you booted for not listening to the host and you will have no
way of knowing why.
Description of the NJ Short Hops Tour
HOW DO I FLY?......
- If you have to ask this question then you need to go off-line and take the flying lessons
that are provided with your Flight Sim.
WHAT IS A HOP?......
- A hop is a flight from one airport to another.
WHAT IS A HOP LIST?......
- A guided list of flights. Start at the designated airport and type ?hop
to get instructions to fly to your next destination.
WHY?......
- It's a challenge. Fly the list one flight at a time and see how well you can do.
- There may be some interesting scenery along the way and some airports may offer a new challange.
- Fly with others and learn.
- The server will remember where you are. The next time you join with the same player name, it will tell
you what airport to start at for your next hop.
WHERE?......
You may connect direct if you know the IP (The IP is four numbers like this - 68.44.228.35)
FSX does not have this feature and you will need FSHostClient to connect with FSX. This is available at
chocolatesoftware.com
You can also get FSHostSpy for free from chocolatesoftware.com
to list all the servers that are currently on-line.
Always provide a "Player Name" when you connect so the server can keep track of your flights.
If you don't provide a "Player Name" the server may reject you.
WHAT DO I DO?......
- Just follow the directions in the chat window and fly your plane.
When you connect to the server you will see a message like this.....
This is a simple example. [Private] means that this message was sent only to you.
There may be more instructions and restrictions.
Please read it carefully and do what it says.
If you don't see it, scroll up in the chat window until you do and read it.
WHAT THEN?......
- Go to the starting airport which in this case is KMJX then type ?hop in the chat window. You will get a message
telling you where to fly to next.
- You can also type ?help in the chat window for additional command options.
HOW DO I GO TO THE STARTING AIRPORT?......
- Select "Go to Airport" and enter the airport identifier which in this case is KMJX.
- If others are at the airport then select a parking position instead of the active runway.
WHERE IS EVERYONE?......
- Sometimes a group will gather in one place to fly together but most of the time the players
are flying the hops list and can be scattered all over the world depending on how far they have gotton
on the list. In the chat window type ?where to see where everyone is.
- Again, type ?help in the chat window for additional command options.
WHAT AIRPORT IS EVERYONE AT?......
- This is a very common but dumb question. If everyone is flying then they are not at any airport (DUH).
You can type ?where and see what airport they are near but players that are not near any airport may not show up.
Some servers do not allow flying on your own or "free flying".
Make sure that you understand the rules of the server that you are flying on.
HOW DO I FIND THE AIRPORTS?......
- The hop instructions will tell you the heading and distance to your next destination. You can
use the Map function but it's much easier if you learn to use the GPS. With the GPS you can set
the destination and follow the course with the autopilot. GPS Help
CAN THE OTHERS SEE MY PLANE?......
- Yes, if you are within 10nm. If you have downloaded a new plane and want to show it off,
forget it. The other players can not see a plane that they don't also have. They will see
a Cessna or the last plane that they selected. If you both have the same plane, you may see
engine running, wheels and flaps but you can't see other features like repaints, open doors, smoke,
tailhook, wing fold, etc.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I LEAVE?......
- Don't worry, The server will remember where you are. The next time you join, it will ask
you to go to the airport of your last successful hop so that you can continue where you left off.
HOW DO I CONTINUE WHERE I LEFT OFF?......
- The best way is to set everything up to take off for your next hop. Then press the ";" key to "Save Your
Flight" before you disconnect. Next time you connect, use the "Select Flight" option, choose the name that you
saved it as and you will be right where you left off.
MY HOP WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL?......
- Do Not Slew. The server will disqualify your hop.
- Do Not change planes in the air. It will look like a slew.
- If you crash, you need to fly the same hop over again.
WHAT IS SLEW?......
- Flight Sim provides a number of ways to move your aircraft in the virtual world. You can "Go to Airport",
position your plane with the Map, or use the "Y" key for Slew mode and you can use the "R" key to
change the speed of the simulator. All of these are considered as cheating or "Slewing".
WHAT PLANE SHOULD I USE?......
- Whatever plane you are comfortable in. Keep in mind that some hops may be long and some of the airports
are small.
- The best combination is a fast plane that you can land on a small airport in adverse
conditions.
- You may wish to check your next hop and decide what plane would be best. It could even be a seaport.
Some servers require only certain types of planes.
Make sure that you understand the rules of the server that you are flying on.
THE HOST HAS DISCONNECTED YOU......
- This message is misleading. It may mean that you have simply lost connection to the host.
If the host has not "booted" you for some reason then continue flying and try to
re-connect.
- I have found that after flying for a while you may get disconnected and get kicked
out each time you try to re-connect. This is a Windows problem and is usually corrected
by re-booting your computer.
FRAMES PER SECOND......
- If you don't know what this is then don't worry about it as the default is 20.
If you have changed it then make sure it is set to 20fps or less. If your rate
is higher it will cause problems for everyone.
- This is a problem caused by Microsoft's DirectX, it sends data to all players for every frame.
If you send too much data too often it will slow everyone down and may cause your simulator to disconnect or lock up.
WHAT IS TEAM SPEAK......
- It's another program that lets you talk to other players that are also using it.
You will need a microphone and the program which is available at
www.goteamspeak.com
Download and install Teamspeak 2 Win32 Client and then type ?ts in the Flight Sim chat window
to get the Teamspeak server address that is being used.
WHAT IS FSNAV......
- It's a "pay for" add on that acts like a radar and you can locate other players anywhere in the world.
You can also create flight plans and hop lists.
An "*" in front of a player name usually indicates their FSNav connection.
WHAT IS THE AIRPORT ILS FREQUENCY......
- I've added this here as it is often asked.
If you go to the Map, zoom in on the airport and select it, a box will open with all the information
about the airport.
